back from the dead
I'm back. the illness has fled and we have hooked up with our all time bros ladyhawk for the final week of this epic 9 week journey. its's been amazing and i cant think of a better way to finish off with ladyhawk... the plan is to hit edmonton on our last day off, go to west edmonton mall, party in the massive water-park and go shoot handguns at the shooting range. i will definately be getting pics of me doing that... until then, winnipeg, regina and saskatoon will be destroyed.

Lay Me Low.
Arrrgh, laid low by sickness on tour is the worst. achey bones i am... found this though. if you've ever wondered what it's like sometimes to travel on tour in a van try this from moby dick....
"there a certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly dicerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. However, nothing dispirits, and nothing seems worth while disputing. He bolts down all events , all creeds, all beliefs, and persuasions, all hard things visible and invisible never mind how knobby; as an ostrich of potent digestion gobbles down bullets and gun flints. And as for small difficulties and worryings, prospects of sudden disaster, peril of life and limb; all these, and death itself, seem to him only sly, good natured hits, and jolly punches in the side bestowed by the unseen and unaccountable old joker. That odd sort of wayward mood i am speaking of, comes over a man only in some time of extreme tribulation; it comes in the very midst of his earnestness, so that what just before might have seemed to him a thing more momentous, now seems but a part of the general joke. there is nothing like the perils of whaling (touring) to breed this free and easy sort of genial, desperado philosophy; and with it i now regarded this whole voyage (tour) of the Pequod (Van), and the great White Whale it's object."

today i am sick. sick in madison wisconsin, and we're also back into the snow... it was nice while it lasted i guess. took a few days off after austin to recover. we holed up in a hotel in denton texas for a couple of days, one of which happened to be st. patty's day, so me and chad hoofed it into town to check on the party, which was unfortunately pretty weak. however we prevailed, and ended up flagging down some crazy guy that gave us a ride in the back of his pick up truck for 10 bucks back to the hotel, cause theres probably one cab in all of denton....there was also some serious hurricane weather while we were there, just to add to the gauntlet of storms we;ve been through on this trip... shows are still killer everynight but i feel the fatigue and i can tell everyone else does too. 10 more days or so and it's home for a nap.

Just made it to Austin, TX. South by Southwest music festival began today and this is the first year i've attended where i'll get to hang out for the whole weekend and check some music out. Usually it's in and out for us. It'll be nice to have a break in the tour.... Lots of freinds playing this year, The Sadies, Blue Rodeo, Pride Tiger, Bon Iver , Howlin Rain, Children...Might try and check out the Lemonheads. Never saw them in high school and should prolly cross them off my list... Wanna see Gary Higgins as well as Greg Ashley from Gris Gris and the sadies and RTX and Roky Erickson, And maybe even Mark Kozelek.....Got an Email fro Mom today. Her and her husband are on their maiden voyage with their new super RV mega-plex heading to Vegas.... She said Vegas was "beautiful"... Not sure if i've ever described Vegas as beautiful but to each his own i guess... i guess they met another giant super mega RV in the park and it turned out to be one of the foo fighters busses. one of fourteen of them apparently. The driver had my mom and her husband over for dinner and they're gonna keep in touch.??? weird and awesome. Mom has a remarkable way of making friends........ Drove from Little Rock today which took a good 10 hours. My neck broke in Montreal and is still killing me. i cant look any direction but forwards and its been a week and a half... total bullshit. Here we are in our communal hotel room suite. I got the floor.....

The last few days were intense. crossed back into canada via buffalo, which happens to be the friendliest border in northa america....cleveland rocked, much much harder than our last show there during the baseball season when the indians were in the playoffs or whatever they do in baseball. people were torn between watching the band and the tv behind the bar. and for the record, baseball sucks....anyways, spent the next three days doin 10mph on freeways covered in ice and jack knifed semi-trailers and ditched frozen cars.... 4 hour drives take 9. however the band and our intrepid reporter soldier through making the best of it reliving the 80's via the van stereo... also for the record, for the most part the 80's sucked too... Now we lay in giant plush beds in the hilton in knoxville watching walk hard the dewey cox story, out of the snow, back to the beautiful south.

Our intrepid reporter
This is Gabe. Gabe is a reporter from Mojo Magazine. He was assigned to travel with us for a couple days so he can write a story on the band for the mag. 2 days turned into 4 as all his flights kept getting cancelled 'cause of the snowstorms out here around Louisville...we took him under our wing and have taken to calling him "our intrepid reporter". we've also taken to getting him drunk.

Ontario Break.
SNOW!!! Everywhere i look there is snow. I shouldn't be shocked but ten years in Vancouver will do that i guess... North bay is Beautiful as is Laurel... Montreal was great the other night, thanks to all the sardines for packin' it in there... Chad got mass drunk and sleepwalk peed in Deirdra's luggage (the usual for him)... went to another show at a dive bar down the street and saw an amazing band from ottawa, can't remember their name cause it was a terrible name and they couldn't sing for shit, but in my state i was sure they ruled, hope i was right.... greyhound bus from montreal to north bay, 8.5 hours long.... Theres something about taking the greyhound through northern ontario, its somehow inspiring in a weird way... and its kinda like a mix between a plane and a vancouver city bus (ie. expensive, long and cramped and full of lunatics.) Toronto tuesday.
